<div>I am writing with a last reminder of the
salon tonight at the Tranzac Club. I hope you
will be able to join us. We know its a busy
time of year, but this is a particularly
important event for building connections
across our campuses.</div>

<div>As many of your know, the differences in
pressures and conditions of work across
departments, disciplines and faculties emerged
as a major issue during the strikes last year
and in conversations since. We organized this
event precisely to respond to these questions,
and to help us all develop a better
understanding of the different challenges we
face based on our locations within the
University. We have an amazing group of
colleagues from the sciences at U of T -
faculty and graduate students - coming
together to discuss these issues and share
their experiences and insights.</div>

<div>Linda Kohn (Ecology & Evolutionary
Biology, and Biology @ UTM), Paul Hamel
(Laboratory Medicine & Pathobiology),
Patricia O'Campo (Dalla Lana School of Public
Health), Robert Fajber (Physics), and Geoffrey
Scott (Math) will discuss the challenges
scientists face in the university today around
issues like the overproduction of science
PhDs, precarious employment in the science and
professional faculties, and the politics of
funding across and within these faculties.
Join us for a panel discussion exploring
questions such as: What do scientists do at U
of T? How is science is funded at U of T? Is
our PhD model sustainable? Are graduate
students workers? The necessities/realities
of recruiting domestic PhD candidates. Can we
in good conscience advise students to pursue a
PhD in science? </div>
