Mariana Valverde will draw on her Spanish left heritage to lead a rousing leftie sing-along to get us started, just what you need to be better prepared for the next demonstration!

This salon will explore the politics of status and nationality on university campuses, the shifting nature of bordering practices, and efforts to transform campuses into sanctuary spaces.

Moderator:
Cynthia Wright teaches at York University in the School of Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies and is a Toronto-based activist. She has published on themes connected to the construction of migrant "illegality," migrant resistance to immigration controls, and no borders perspectives.

Speakers:

Paloma E. Villegas is a migrant, teacher, research and artist.  She currently works as a lecturer at the University of Toronto, Scarborough department of Sociology.

Rosa Solorzano is the Event Coordinator and Development Assistant at the FCJ Refugee Centre. She is an active member of the FCJ Youth Network and a Core Group member of the Canadian Council for Refugees Youth Network. She is also a part-time freelance graphic designer and film maker.

Tanya Aberman is a PhD Candidate in Gender Feminist and Women’s Studies at York University. She is also the Research and Project Coordinator at the FCJ Refugee Centre where she focuses on intensive case management, access to education and community-based program development.

Gokboru Tanyildiz is a member of Academics for Peace Toronto (BAK Toronto) and the Toronto New Socialists. He is also a PhD candidate in Sociology at York University.
