Colleagues, <br>
<br>
Many groups, faculty and graduate students at York have had
deep connections since the 1990s with universities, NGOs and
social movements in the eastern coast of Nicaragua, in
particular in the Bilwi region. This region has now been
devastated by two hurricanes in sequence -- an unprecedented
situation. You can get a glimpse of the destruction here: <a

<br>
Three colleagues, one of them at York and the other two
closely associated to York, all originally from the region,
are organizing financial support for the local colleagues. I
would hope you consider donating -- even $10 can go a long way
for people who are in need of everything. Please see the
request below. The place to donate is here: <a

<div style="direction: ltr;">Two devastating hurricanes - ETA
and then IOTA - in a period of less than 15 days have caused
the greatest impact in the history of the North Caribbean
Coast of Nicaragua. The effects have been reported in
national and international media, which have highlighted the
extensive damage to infrastructure, homes, schools, and
medical centers, and on the livelihoods of coastal
communities and families in the Caribbean, central and
northern region of the country, as well as in the rest of
Central American countries. </div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div style="direction: ltr;">The impact of the hurricanes was
especially brutal in Bilwi, the regional capital of the
autonomous region of the Caribbean of Nicaragua, home of two
regional indigenous and afro-descendant universities. Both
Universities’ campuses have also experienced extensive
damage to their infrastructure. Likewise, dozens of
university teachers suffered material damage to their homes,
livelihoods and means of work and therefore require our
immediate attention. </div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div style="direction: ltr;">Through this platform we are
going to generate an emergency and solidarity fund - Faculty
to Faculty - which will be aimed at colleagues (mostly
women), university educators, costeño professionals and
indigenous collaborators who have had significant material
losses due to both hurricanes. </div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div style="direction: ltr;">The funds collected will be
received and distributed by Dr. Arelly Barbeyto, a professor
of sociology at the Central American University (UCA), who
together with other colleagues in Bilwi have identified
priority needs in this group of University faculty. </div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div style="direction: ltr;">Through this site, Facebook and
email we will be informing you how the funds will be used
and their beneficiaries. </div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div style="direction: ltr;">Our gratitude for your support
and solidarity,</div>
