Support for Israel in the west has always been built on the false notion that Israel is an embattled but enlightened liberal democracy in a “tough neighborhood.” As Israel's true face as an apartheid state founded and maintained by ethnic cleansing, occupation and systematic racism against Palestinians is exposed to more people, it is losing support among key constituencies. To win back the support and split the Palestine solidarity movement, Israel has turned to a new strategy of promoting itself as a haven for gay rights and sex tourism. But will it work?
Ali Abunimah is co-founder of the Electronic Intifada and author of “One Country: A Bold Proposal To End the Israeli-Palestinian impasse”. Based in Chicago, he has written hundreds of articles on the question of Palestine. His upcoming book is tentatively titled “The Battle For Justice In Palestine”.
