Statement of Solidarity with CUPE 3902, Unit 1 by WGSI members
We, as faculty, teachers, staff, and students of the Women and Gender Studies Institute, stand together in support of improving the conditions for scholarship and study at the University of Toronto for all members of our community.
We share a common commitment to academic integrity and learning, as well as recognition of the sharp inequalities that have come to condition the different working roles at the University.
We recognize the precarious labor conditions that teaching assistants, course instructors and sessional instructors work under, as well as the fact that working conditions are structurally tied to the quality of undergraduate education.
Teaching assistants and many course instructors are also full-time graduate students living below the poverty line, and PhD student whose funding packages leave students in their final years with no tuition waivers or financial supports.
As a community of scholars, teachers, staff, and students at WGSI committed to the future of intellectual work, we support the efforts of its members to address these inequalities and to together build a university where its members learn and work with dignity.
