Statement of Solidarity from The University of British Columbia, Department of Geography 

Members of UBC Geography wish to strongly voice their support for the labour actions now taking place at the University of Toronto and York University. We are proud of our friends and colleagues at U of T and York, and recognize that efforts to improve working conditions at their institutions matter to the fate of public universities everywhere, including ours. 

The forms of precarious labor that increasingly define life at University of Toronto and York University not only reduce academic performance, they disrupt family life, cause personal and emotional stress, and ruin livelihoods that have been years in the making. While scholars at these universities continue to do excellent work, the conditions under which they are being asked to perform are unacceptable. Temporary and sessional academics are struggling alongside insufficiently funded graduate students, oft-neglected custodial staff, and a belligerent managerial culture. Temporary and sessional academics are also increasingly responsible for a substantial portion of undergraduate teaching, along with conducting research at and for their institution.  

Striking members of U of T and York - thank you for taking action! You are inspirations.
