This month, we will be exploring the politics of DIVESTMENT campaigns on
campus, with organizers from Fossil Fuel Divestment, BDS, and historic
campaigns for divestment from South Africa.
Gavin Smith is a long-time member of the University of Toronto
community. He has worked and written on political struggles in South
America and Western Europe. Among other things he was active in the Munk
Out campaign and continues his concerns with the practices of the
university’s administration, the working conditions of staff, and the
alienated experience of students.
Joe Curnow is a graduate student in Education and instructor in Equity
Studies. Her research looks at the Fossil Fuel Divestment campaign as a
site of politicization, focusing on learning about race, gender, and
colonialism. Before coming to U of T, Joe worked as a student organizer
on economic justice issues and as a community organizer.
Chandni is a doctoral student at the Ontario Institute for Studies in
Education (OISE). She is a member of the Graduate Students Union
Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) adhoc committee and Students
against Israeli Apartheid (UofT)
Melissa Levin is a graduate student in Political Science who also
teaches a number of African Studies and Politics courses at U of T.
Melissa was an anti-apartheid activist in South Africa where she worked
for the ANC directing campaign strategy and writing speeches (amongst
others, for Nelson Mandela). She also served as a nationally elected
official in the organization's Youth League.
Thursday January 28, 7pm at the Tranzac Club, 292 Brunswick Avenue,
Toronto.
Please join us and circulate the invitation through your networks!
