[Fdu] Purge of 44 "Academics for Peace" by "State of Emergency" Decree - Call for solidarity

Dear Friends and Colleagues on the FDU list

Please see below an *urgent* call for solidarity with Turkish  
academics (with thanks to N. Davis on this list for the alert).

Please also note that, once I have the details, I will be forwarding  
information about a September public meeting on the crisis in Turkey.  
Friends and colleagues at Ryerson are planning this meeting for  
mid-September.

Dear Friends,

Attached please find a call for solidarity with 44 academics,
signatories of the "We shall not be party to this crime" statement in
January 2016, who were now dismissed and banned from public service by a
midnight decree on 1 September 2016, together with 2300 other academics
and a total of 40 000  public employees, with the claim (for which no
evidence has been cited) of having "supported terrorism."

The call,  issued by the "Academics for Peace" collective, invites you
to publish statements in support of academics in Turkey, and also send
them to government and to higher education officials. The call (in
French as well as in English) may also be found on the web,

their institutional affiliations as well as professional fields.

Cynthia,  I hope you can encourage response to this urgent appeal from 
Turkey.  As you'll see, there is not a petition attached. Rather they 
are hoping for "statements in support of academics" sent to government
