Hi everyone,
This is just a head's up that the Society for Socialist Studies has now
launched its Call for Sessions for our 2017 conference at Ryerson
University (see below). Deadline for sessions is December 9. We hope
that you will consider submitting something.
Also, we hope that you will consider renewing your membership with the
Society for the coming year. Your support of the Society is important
for us to keep socialist scholarship open and available. Please see
below to see how you can sign up.
all the best,
Chris
Secretary, Society for Socialist Studies
*Call for Sessions - Liberation Here and Now:
Continuity and Change in Socialist Studies at 50 Years and Beyond*
congress**
This year, the Society for Socialist Studies turns fifty, and we look
forward to welcoming a record number of colleagues to our annual
conference at Congress 2017, hosted by *Ryerson University*, Toronto,
Ontario from May 30 – June 2 2017.
The theme of the Conference is ‘Liberation Here and Now: Continuity and
Change in Socialist Studies at 50 Years and Beyond.’ Diverging from the
Congress theme, ‘From Far and Wide: The Next 150’, we call upon
participants to fundamentally trouble Project Canada, to celebrate past
and future resistances and solidarities, and to engage in dialogue on
how to get to a decolonized praxis and collective liberation here and
now. As part of this dialogue, we remain open as always to sessions,
papers, and roundtables on the full range of socialist inquiry.
We are currently seeking both session proposals (for panels,
roundtables, and special events) and individual paper proposals.
To *submit* either kind of proposal, click here
<http://cts.vresp.com/c/?SocietyforSocialistS/8a71459d4f/088cc47970/565da9767b> and
follow the prompts.
Consideration of session proposals for inclusion in the final programme
will begin *December 9, 2016*, at which time the session submission
process will be closed. Paper proposals may be submitted up to *January
31, 2017.*

*Renew Your Membership*
2017 marks the 50^th anniversary of the Society for Socialist Studies.
From an era marked by the Civil Rights and anti-Vietnam war movements,
to the current era marked by Climate Justice, Black Lives Matter and
Idle No More, we have worked to build a society dedicated to keeping
relevant the ideas of socialism. What better time, then, to join the
society – or if you are a former member, to renew your membership?
SSS is an independent academic association, not affiliated with any
political organization or group. Currently, the Society focuses on two
initiatives:
* Our peer-reviewed academic *journal*. The Winter 2016 issue /The
Subaltern: Speaking Through Socialism /is availablehere
<http://cts.vresp.com/c/?SocietyforSocialistS/8a71459d4f/088cc47970/2b09332edd>
* Our annual *conference*. The 2017 Congress will take place at
Ryerson University in Toronto, June 2017. The call for papers is
available here.
The journal and conference are important vehicles which provide a
platform for established scholars. Critically, they have also become
important vehicles allowing a new generation of scholars to present and
publish their research.
All of this takes money. We run on a shoestring budget relying on the
work of volunteers. That means that we are completely dependent on the
support and commitment of the members of the society.
Membership *fees* are low. We offer a special $10 rate to student,
retired, low income and unemployed members, and just $40 for full members.
The *membership form *is available here:
