The following is an excerpt from the recent statement by a group of
Turkish students/academics based in Toronto. It is the section focused
on suggested items for solidarity and action.
"We, as Academics for Peace Toronto (BAK Toronto), suggest several ways for
possible actions and collaboration to show your solidarity and support with
academics and intellectuals.
>From academic institutions:
1. Temporarily hosting or hiring an academic currently at risk in Turkey through
many ways including mobilizing the organization of Scholar at Risk, offering
post-doc or visiting scholar positions, and providing PhD student positions.
2. Initiating joint research projects, grants, or faculty and student exchanges
and establishing new relations with academics at risk in Turkey to create a
solidarity network.
3. Organizing talks, exhibitions, and press conferences or producing films and
publications to disseminate knowledge about the crackdown on all opposition
groups including academics and intellectuals in Turkey with the aim of
increasing public awareness.
4. Mobilizing the unions, associations or academic groups in the institutions to
publish a statement supporting academics in Turkey and sending them to officials
in Turkey, especially to the Council of Higher Education in Ankara.
>From the unions:
1. Informing union members about the contemporary situation of the Academics for
Peace in Turkey and publishing a statement.
2. Providing financial support for the academics purged from their academic
positions in their universities.
Please disseminate our call for solidarity in your networks. Ask your college,
university, professional organization, or union to publish a statement in
support of academics in Turkey."
