*Description: Jerusalem - Trump, apartheid, and Brand Israel*
Trump’s official recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, the
move of the US embassy to Jerusalem and reactions to these announcements
has put the city into the international spotlight. Mohammed Altar’s
documentary, Jerusalem – the East Side Story, looks behind the headlines
to the history of the city and the reality of everyday life
for Palestinians in Jerusalem
under Israeli policies of dispossession and demographic engineering.

To divert attention from this reality Israel has attempted to focus on
Jerusalem as a “global, cosmopolitan  city” dissociating it from
Israel’s human rights abuses and apartheid policies. The active role that
local institutions -
Toronto City Hall and the University of Toronto
-
have taken in providing support for these rebranding efforts will be
discussed.
