Dear Colleagues,
Please join colleagues from OCAD, York U and other faculty members,
students and supporters from across the province on a Facebook event
tomorrow at 4:30 pm (Tuesday, Apr. 19). The event calls for the firing
of Minister of Colleges and Universities Ross Romano over the brutal,
sudden closure of programs (69) and dismissal of faculty (110) at
Laurentian University last week.
Because the Ford government - at the behest of, and in agreement with,
the Laurentian U administration led by President Robert Hache - chose to
allow the use of the (normally used for business insolvencies) CCAA
process (*Canadian Companies’ Arrangement Ac*t) - for the first time
ever for a public Canadian university), Laurentian U was
‘restructured’/downsized last week in a highly secretive, court-ordered
process that circumvented collegial consultation with faculty and staff.
The Collective Agreement was suspended, its clauses regarding ‘financial
exigency’ (for dealing with university financial issues) were set aside,
dismissed faculty colleagues did not get even get severance pay, and
lost their jobs on two weeks notice. For many dismissed colleagues,
their last day of work (and pay) from LU will be May 15, and after that
they can apply for EI. They - and the underserved Indigenous and
Francophone students in Northern Ontario - have been thrown under the
bus by the negligence of the Minster and LU senior administrators, both
of whom should have attended to LUs financial problems transparently
many months ago, and sought provincial government funding to resolve them.
