Update on Dr. Hassan Diab of Carleton's Sociology Department extradited
one year ago.

*After One Year in Detention, Hassan Continues to Fight for Justice
*
With the one-year anniversary of his pretrial detention approaching, Dr.
Hassan Diab remains in prison in the vicinity of Paris. He has been in
detention for one year, since the Supreme Court of Canada refused to
hear his case on November 13, 2014, and he was extradited to France the
following day.

Hassan was not in France at the time of the 1980 rue Copernic bombing.
He is not an anti-Semite. He has a lifelong record of opposition to all
forms of bigotry and violence, as attested by longtime friends and
colleagues <http://www.justiceforhassandiab.org/testimonials>. His palm
prints and fingerprints do not match those of the suspect. Yet he can
expect to remain in prison for up to two years while the French
examining magistrate decides whether to bring him to trial.

Hassan was extradited to France based on discredited “evidence” that the
Canadian judge described as “very problematic”, “convoluted”, “very
confusing”, and “with conclusions that are suspect”. The unsourced
intelligence and discredited handwriting analysis that France withdrew
from the Canadian extradition proceedings because of their unreliability
remain in the French dossier. We are very concerned that Hassan may be
wrongfully convicted.
*
We call for a fair, open, and unbiased process in France* in which none
of the discredited “evidence” withdrawn in Canada would be used against
Hassan. Making an *innocent man* pay for a crime he did not commit will
only further the tragedy.

<http://www.justiceforhassandiab.org/bring-hassan-home> statement:

“Dr. Hassan Diab was extradited from Canada to France based on a
handwriting analysis report that the Canadian extradition judge
described as “convoluted, very confusing, with conclusions that are
suspect”. Hassan is now incarcerated in a French prison where he may
remain up to two years while the examining magistrate decides
whether to bring him to trial. I am deeply concerned that Hassan may
be wrongfully convicted under France’s anti-terrorism laws, based on
deeply flawed handwriting analysis and the use of secret, unsourced
intelligence. I support Hassan’s legal defence in France, so he has
a real chance to fight for justice and return to his home in Canada.
We must make sure that the real perpetrators of the rue Copernic
crime are brought to justice. Making an innocent man pay for a crime
he did not commit will only further the tragedy.”

*Hassan sends his heartfelt regards and gratitude* to his all his
friends and supporters who have steadfastly stood by him over the years.
Despite the daily hardship of imprisonment, Hassan draws strength from
the knowledge that we have not forgotten him and are working to bring
him home to his wife and children in Canada.
