Dear Colleagues,

I am inviting you to sign a solidarity statement supporting the ongoing
protests in India and especially on Indian university campuses against
the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019. As members of a university  it is
especially crucial that we condemn the brutal suppression of dissent on
University campuses in India and police violence against students. Could
you also forward it to the List.

Please find the statement below. Scroll down for a solidarity protest on
Friday and some useful links to context and ongoing struggles in India.

Thank you,
Bhavani

Summary and info:

The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) passed by both houses of the Indian
parliament has led to widespread protests across the country over the
past week. The violent police response to these demonstrations has
caused much harm to dissenters, with multiple injuries and deaths
reported by a cross-section of citizens and journalists. Indian
universities have been a site for agitation ever since the Narendra
Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power in 2014. The latest
attack on students is in line with the constant persecution of those who
think differently from the Modi administration. Citizens across India
are protesting the CAA as it is part of a legislative drive to target
and isolate Muslims. CAA must be seen in conjunction with the National
Register of Citizens (NRC), a proposed nationwide scheme (already
ongoing in the state of Assam) that is set to render innumerable Muslims
stateless.

To protest the inhumane decisions of the Modi-led administration, we
urge you to join us outside the Consulate General of India this Friday
(20 December 2019), at 365 Bloor Street East, from 12-2 PM. If you
believe that students have a right to voice their opinions in the public
sphere and that protests should not be met with state-sponsored
violence, please add your voice to the struggle and honour those who are
fighting the fascist regime everyday in India. We hope to see you there,
in solidarity, with placards, revolutionary poetry, and song. If you
would like to learn more about our concerns, we are sharing a couple of
links below:
